A race firestorm has erupted over a study that claims black women are uglier than other races.
Website Psychology Today was accused of peddling racist psuedo-science when it published the claims this week in a blog by controversial evolutionary psychologist Dr Satoshi Kanazawa.
Kanazawa’s post, which the website took down after a huge backlash, argued that black women were less physically attractive than other women because of higher testosterone levels and genetic mutations.
He wrote on Monday in his regular blog, “Because they have existed much longer in human evolutionary history, Africans have more mutations in their genomes than other races” and argued that higher levels of male hormones made black women appear less feminine and thus less attractive to men.
The study appears to be based on the perspectives and opinions of adult respondents, despite Kanazawa reporting his findings as objective facts.
His article caused a huge backlash and drew accusations that he and Psychology Today were peddling racist nonsense.
University of Melbourne social science lecturer Dr Lauren Rosewarne said the findings were a throwback to 1960s studies that claimed low intelligence was a black trait.
“It’s dressed up as academic but in essence it’s eugenics,” Rosewarne said.
Kanazawa has form when it comes to stirring up controversies. Another of his posts is “Are All Women Essentially Prostitutes?”
