Reality TV star Kim Kardashian is set to take the publishing world by storm with a book of her selfies.
According to publishers Rizzoli New York, the book is called Selfish and will be available by April 2015 at a cost of $19.95 (£11).
In an episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians, the 33-year-old reality star has been snapping away at herself during her trip to Thailand. On camera, she told her mother Brody Jenner that she needed around 1,200 selfies to fill her 352-page book.
“It ended up turning out so cool that we came up with this idea to do a book – a selfie book. I’m going to make some like super racy. I mean, every girl takes like full like pictures of their ass in the mirror,” Kim told her mother.
The publicity for the book explains that Kardashian, who has 17 million Instagram followers, is one of the world’s expert proponents of this modern-day self-portrait phenomenon.
“The selfie photography of Kim Kardashian, featuring many never-before-seen personal images from one of the most recognizable and iconic celebrities in the world.
“Through social media (Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook), Kim connects with her fans on a daily basis, sharing details of her life with her selfie photography. Widely regarded as a trailblazer of the ‘selfie movement’ – a modern-day self-portrait of the digital age – Kim has mastered the art of taking flattering and highly personal photos of oneself.”
Lauren Rosewarne, a social researcher at the University of Melbourne, told the Sydney Morning Herald: “Social media by its very nature is visual.
“Artists have been doing self-portraits for eons, yes we’re seeing it more today, but that’s only because the technology has changed. Celebrities use social media because it makes their fans feel like they have round-the-clock access. They do this through selfies.”
